The Jordanian government has confirmed that ISIL militants have killed captive pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh. State television reported the government said the killingt had happened one month ago on January 3.

Supporters of the Islamist group circulated photos on social media of a video which purportedly shows a man burning in a cage.

However, the images have yet to be independently verified.

The Head of the Jordanian armed forces has apparently informed the family of his death.

The 26-year-old First Lieutenant was captured after his F16 crashed in the ISIL stronghold of Raqqa Syria.

The insurgents had been calling for the release of Sajida al-Rishawi who is on death row in Amman in exchange for his life.

If the video is real, it would appear the ISIL group wished to make the death of the Kasasbeh particularly brutal. They have repeatedly called for his death as pilot involved in the US-led coalition against the militants.

President Obama said that the video once verified proved the viciousness and barbarity of the organisation.

“The United States strongly condemns ISIL’s actions and we call for the immediate release of all those held captive by ISIL,“ White House spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in a statement.

The US reiterated its support for the Jordanian government and people.
