The 90th edition of the Sao Silvestre Road Race got underway in Sao Paulo on Wednesday with Ethiopian runners taking the top spots in the male and female events.
Some 30,000 competitors from more than 40 different countries took part in the 15 km trek through Brazil’s largest city on the morning of New Year’s Eve.
Ethiopia’s Dawit Admasu was first to cross the finish line at 45 minutes and 4 seconds, edging out Stanley Koech of Kenya by the narrowest of margins while Fabiano Naasi completed the podium.
Ethiopia also reigned supreme in the women’s event. Ymer Wude Ayalew produced a superb display to complete the course in a winning time of 50 minutes and 43 seconds. Her compatriot Netsanet Gudeta Kebede came home second with Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya having to settle for third place.
