There is a sad end for a hippo that made headlines around the world after jumping out of the back of a truck in Taiwan.

The two-tonne animal has died after being taken by authorities to an abandoned fish farm for treatment.

The hippo broke a leg and a tooth in the fall from the truck, and other possible internal injuries.

The hippo, named A-ho, was being transported back to its home in a privately-owned zoo just after a trip to a local spring when it escaped, local media said.

The animal was then taken to an abandoned fish farm by local authorities for treatment.

Chief of Taichung City Bureau of Agriculture, Wang Jiun-Shong, said that A-ho was found floating lifelessly on Monday morning.

“At around 6:30 in the morning, when the caretaker arrived at the scene, he found that the animal was no longer moving, and was certain that he had already passed away,” said Wang.

“So at this unfortunate time we express deep mourning for his death.”

Citing local veterinarians who examined the animal, local media say the root cause was intestinal problems which resulted from injuries sustained during the animal’s fall on Saturday.
