Now Tripadvisor has revealed where people are headed based on the initial results of its Summer Travel Index 2026. The report highlights the fastest growing destinations for British travellers year-on-year based on travel dates between June and August.

Spanish destinations top the list, with Alicante in the number one spot, and Playa de Palma, Malaga and Sitges also in the top 10.

Other popular destinations like Rhodes, Budapest and Dublin also feature in the ranking, as well as emerging destinations like Alvor, Ksamil and Krakow.

Why Alicante is the top trending destination for 2026

Alicante, on Spain’s Costa Blanca coast, is seeing surging interest lately for its affordability, year-round sunny weather and excellent accessibility, making it popular with both tourists and digital nomads.

It offers a unique blend of modern beach lifestyle and historic charm, with Moorish, Mediterranean and Christian heritage, along with a very walkable and bustling dog-friendly city centre.

Explore the hilltop Santa Bárbara Castle or head to the vibrant, mosaic-tiled Explanada de España promenade. Wander through the old town El Barrio Santa Cruz’s narrow streets decorated with traditional tiles and flowers.

Relax on pristine beaches like Postiguet Beach or take a boat trip to Tabarca Island to snorkel in crystal-clear waters.

Culture lovers can also enjoy the Moors and Christians festival in summer, occurring from late April to mid-October across various regions. Head to the MACA (Contemporary Art Museum) or the Ocean Race Museum for more art and history, or the central market for local cheeses and meats.

Tuck into arroz a banda (rice with fish stock) and a variety of tapas and fresh seafood.
