Cheers, car horns, and chants echoed through the streets of New York City on Tuesday night as residents celebrated Zohran Mamdani’s historic mayoral victory.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic assemblymember, has been elected mayor of New York City, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
The democratic socialist’s victory marks a historic moment as he becomes the city’s first Muslim, first South Asian, and first Africa-born mayor.
Mamdani, known for his progressive platform, will also be New York’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on 1 January.
