France will introduce partial, localised curfews in some urban areas following a weekend of rioting and looting, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Monday.

Speaking after an emergency meeting with government officials in Paris, Lecornu said he had instructed local prefects to coordinate with mayors and business representatives to determine where restrictions would be imposed.

The measures aim to protect residents and businesses after violence damaged public buildings and shops across the country.

Lecornu said a state of emergency had not been ruled out, but that targeted curfews were better suited to the current situation.
