Wildfires in eastern Washington forced 5,000 home evacuations, destroyed about 600 buildings and continued to strain firefighting resources.

Wildfires continued burning out of control in eastern Washington on Sunday, forcing thousands of homes to evacuate near Spokane, the state's second-largest city.

Hundreds of homes, businesses and other buildings have been destroyed, though no deaths have been reported.

The fires have scorched several square miles and are among dozens of active blazes across the western United States, straining firefighting resources.

In neighboring Idaho and Oregon, crews entered their tenth day battling a separate wildfire covering hundreds of square miles.
