Mourners assembled at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad after Iranian state media confirmed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike.

Mourners gathered at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on Sunday after Iranian state media confirmed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike targeting his compound in downtown Tehran.

Iranian state media said the 86-year-old was killed in an airstrike targeting his compound in downtown Tehran.

Crowds were seen raising flags atop the shrine, women mourning and men chanting, while others held posters of the late leader.

Some mourners cried and sang as they assembled around the shrine complex in one of Iran’s holiest cities. Iranian authorities announced a period of national mourning.
