A temporary ice road has opened between Estonia’s two largest islands, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, as ferry services face disruption due to heavy sea ice.
The 17-kilometre route across the frozen sea was opened by the Transport Administration on Sunday to provide an alternative connection for island residents.
The road is open during daylight hours only and is subject to strict safety rules, including vehicle weight limits, speed restrictions and minimum distances between vehicles.
Authorities said conditions will be closely monitored and the road may close at short notice if safety deteriorates.
