Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano has erupted for the first time in recorded history, sending ash high above the Afar region.

The eruption began on Sunday and pushed a tall plume into the sky, with light tremors felt around Erta Ale and the town of Afdera.

Satellite images later showed a broad ash cloud moving east over the Red Sea.

The volcano sits in the Danakil Depression, a harsh and remote area where ground access is limited.

The volcano is located about 15 kilometres southeast of the active Erta Ale volcano.
