Video. Deadly rush at UN food warehouse as Gaza hunger crisis worsens

Updated:

Hundreds of Palestinians forced their way into a UN food warehouse in central Gaza on Wednesday, desperate for aid as hunger grips the territory after months of border closures.

Crowds pushed and shouted at the warehouse entrance, with some tearing through the metal walls to reach supplies. Many emerged carrying 25kg bags of flour, navigating throngs of people still trying to get in. Two people were killed and several were injured.

The scramble for food shows a worsening crisis, with Gaza nearing famine after nearly three months of Israeli restrictions.

Uncertainty remains over who opened fire a day earlier at a separate aid site, where one person was killed and dozens injured.

Aid agencies say current systems cannot meet the needs of Gaza’s 2.3 million people.
