Rescue crews worked to evacuate more residents stranded by deadly flooding in the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy on Thursday.

At least 13 people have now died from rains that pushed rivers and tributaries to burst their banks, according to state media, though the death toll could rise further as a number of people remain missing.

The drought-parched region of Emilia-Romagna had already estimated just under €1 billion euros in losses from heavy rains earlier this month.

But officials said the widespread damage to farmland, buildings and infrastructure in the latest floods has pushed losses to multiple billions.
