A group of divers placed a Christmas tree on the bottom of a lake in Russia's Kazan region on Sunday.

At near-freezing water temperatures, the team swam around it in circles toasting with champagne underwater.

The divers - mostly experienced members of a local diving club - said their club's holiday tradition went back 40 years.

They plunged six meters (19.6 feet) underwater in the morning to fix the decorated tree and see in a new year in the +4 degrees Celsius (39.2 degrees Fahrenheit) cold water of "Blue Lake".

The Christmas tree will remain underwater for two weeks and will be taken back to the surface by the same divers after the holidays.
