The influx of refugees into Germany could boost tobacco sales, according to industry analysts.

With many fleeing Syria where nearly half of men smoke, one estimate says the extra consumption could equate to a one percent increase in the tobacco market.

Another analyst said a preference for roll-ups and lower-end factory cigarettes could benefit companies like British American Tobacco and Imperial, who are strong in Germany.

There’s no estimate though of the long-term cost to the country’s health service.

Each year 120,000 deaths in Germany are linked to smoking.
