The Irish-based group Allergan is in talks with Pfizer over a possible merger that would unite the US makers of Botox and Viagra – and create the world’s largest drugmaker.
Both stress no agreement has been reached and the discussions may lead to no deal at all.
If they did combine forces, the two would be worth over 300 billion dollars, overtaking Johnson & Johnson.
Shares in Allergan jumped by almost 10 percent on the reports.
Pfizer, based in New York and the maker of Viagra, has been looking to shift its tax base: Allergan’s Irish rate is far lower.
It’s thought an acquisition could also help possible plans to split its business into two divisions.
