There could be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by 2050

  • Production of plastic is soaring globally
  • Very little is recycled
  • Dame Ellen gives stark warning in Davos

She lived and breathed the oceans and broke world records circumnavigating the globe.

Having seen more of the world’s oceans than anyone else, Dame Ellen MacArthur is in a prime position to talk about saving the planet.

A report released by her foundation at the World Economic Forum in Davos outlines the impact waste plastic will have on the environment in the years to come.

Dame Ellen told Euronews it is not too late to change course:

“If we can re-jig the whole system, if we can agree on a certain palette of materials, have a conversation around the table with the right people, if we can work with policy makers, if we can have innovation moon shots on new technology and we can continue to improve the economics and the statistics then we really can put a path forward to change the plastics economy completely.”

What happens to the plastic?

Despite the soaring production levels, only five percent of plastics are recycled.

40% go into landfills while a third end up in fragile ecosystems like the sea.
