In 1979 during the Islamic Revolution in Iran French photographer Christine Spengler donned the veil to snap Iranian women.
It was time of volatile, high-octane fanaticism, but she did have one advantage: “A man could never have done that without being accused of being a spy hiding under a veil. For me it was easy,” she explained.
She also shot pictures in Afghanistan: “This series was immediately published by Paris Match. Those women carrying babies wrapped up, wearing eyeliner like Egyptian mummies, you couldn’t tell whether they were still alive. I am still a very engaged woman and I document grief and pain in black in white, the beauty of the world in colour, with the flaming colours, which I never used while covering wars.”
