Opportunities for collaboration are anchored in a long-term plan for growth through the UK’s modern Industrial and Trade Strategy, announced in June.
The economic relationship between the UK and Europe has remained mutually vital throughout the fluctuations of the last decade. In the 12 months to September 2025, total UK–EU trade reached £860 billion, accounting for nearly half of the UK’s total trade.
UK exports to the EU alone were worth £388 billion (ONS Balance of Payments July to September 2025), making Europe the UK’s single largest export destination.
Trade between the UK and Europe has been shaped by geography, shared supply chains and decades of economic integration. Through changes of government, the commercial ties between them have remained deep and structurally significant.
Now, as both sides navigate a more volatile global environment, the focus is firmly on strengthening cooperation.
Ceri Morgan, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Europe, talked to Euronews about the next chapter in relations between the UK and Europe – and why she believes the current moment is about consolidation rather than reinvention.
As the UK and Europe reset their trading relationship, technology is emerging as one of the most dynamic areas of cooperation. The UK is in many ways Europe’s ‘innovation engine’. And collaboration across borders is at the heart of it, backed by deep pools of capital, vibrant links between academia and business, and new pro-innovation, pro-business policies from the Government.
Companies around the world are seeking new ways to build and scale digital technologies, and the UK is playing an increasingly central role, with a tech sector worth around $1.2 trillion. The largest in Europe and the third most valuable in the world.
From electric vehicle batteries to aircraft wings, many of the products shaping Europe’s future are not made in one country alone. They are built across borders – with parts, expertise and technology moving between states – including between mainland Europe and the UK - at every stage.
European manufacturers increasingly build their supply chains across borders, drawing on suppliers, skills and production in multiple countries. For companies like Bosch, the UK plays a specific role within that network, contributing a unique set of skills and expertise.
“Europe is… very much an integrated economy,” says Steffen Hoffmann, managing director of Bosch UK and Ireland, and “it would not be sufficient to look for talent only in one country.”
Like many large manufacturers, Bosch operates across Europe through a network of manufacturing sites, research centres and national businesses, sourcing components from different countries and supplying multiple markets.
