The worldwide symbol of American cinema is getting a makeover ahead of its 100th anniversary next year. A dozen workers are cleaning and painting the Hollywood sign to give it a second birth.
It was installed in 1923 by a real estate developer who wanted to advertise housing plots in the Hollywood land district. The sign has appeared in many films and became instantly recognisable around the world.
