Theresa May comments on negotiations during EU summit
ADVERTISEMENTBritish Prime Minister Theresa May admits there’s still “some way” to go in moving the big Brexit talks forward.
She has been busy woo’ing EU leaders at a Brussels summit, trying to get the negotiations into a second phase, focusing on trade. But stumbling blocks remain, including the size of the divorce bill.
“What I have made clear to our EU counterparts in relation to financial contribution is what I set out in my Florence speech, which is, that I have said that nobody needs to be concerned for the current budget plan that they would have to either pay more, or receive less, as a result of the UK leaving,” May told reporters.
“We will honour the commitments we have made during our membership.”
No second round of talks yet, but a goodwill gesture from leaders, who have launched internal preparations to speed up future talks. It means May will not go home empty handed.
The PM says she’s positive and ambitious, with agreement on citizens’ rights in “touching distance.” But it may not be enough to silence those feisty critics she is facing at home.
