Euronews kicks off new season of ‘Real Economy’ with a strong focus on the recovery, jobs and supply chain disruptions

15 December 2021

Lyon, France – 15 December 2021 Euronews, Europe’s leading international news media, has kicked off the new season of Real Economy, its flagship programme dedicated to macroeconomic trends and their impact on European business owners, employees and job-seekers.

Real Economy will pick up where the last season left off: with the economic recovery in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. The new series will examine the financial consequences of the ongoing COVID-19 surge, supply chain difficulties, the gradual roll-out of the EU’s €750-billion recovery fund and job creation. The programme will explore how Europe-wide initiatives can respond to today’s economic challenges and generate change across countries.

The new Real Economy season, the ninth since the series was launched in 2014, will comprise 14 episodes of eight minutes each. Euronews will air two new episodes per month – every other Wednesday at 21.50 CET – on all TV language editions. The episodes will be also available on euronews.com and shared across social media, together with online-exclusive bonus material.

Naomi Lloyd returns as lead anchor, joined by a team of specialised Euronews reporters. They will travel the continent to see first-hand how EU-level decisions and economic fluctuations influence employment, public spending, consumer behaviour and the lives of business owners. Naomi will sit down with high-ranking officials to gain key insights into the latest macroeconomic trends.

The season premiere aired on December 15 on Euronews TV. The first guest was Laurence Boone, chief economist at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), who discussed Europe’s growth outlook in times of uncertainty. Subjects of study during this season will include the twin green and digital transitions, the European Child Guarantee and the EU’s macro-financial assistance (MFA) for third countries.

Episodes always include an introductory ‘crash course’, which helps viewers decipher economic and financial jargon, on-the-ground reports and revealing high-level interviews. Real Economy is part of Euronews’ diverse catalogue of European magazines, which encompasses titles like The Global Conversation, Ocean, Smart Regions and Euronews Witness.

As such, Real Economy’s main mission is to translate the complex world of EU affairs into understandable narratives for a general audience. Real Economy is produced in partnership with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) and Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL).
