Silk stockings have inspired Broadway musicals and novels, having garnered the top spot in women's intimate garments up until the middle of the last century. Even since the Victorian era, silk stockings became a woman's best friend and were often viewed as an exclusive and intimate gift from a man to the love, or mistress, of his life.

With the growth of the more democratic nylons, though, demand for woven silk stockings fell.

In the small village of Sumene, an almost a 100-year-old French factory called Cervin, is bringing silk stockings back to life. The company has once again turned on its original American looms, dating back to the 1930s, in order to rekindle the desire for the luxury of silk. According to CEO Serge Massal, only 10 of these machines still exist today — and five of them are housed at Cervin.

After resurrecting the vintage techniques, Cervin claims to be the only company to make this kind of stocking today.

Among Cervin’s clients are Catherine Deneuve, Beyoncé, Agent Provocateur and the Follies Bergeres.
