I often tell my reporters that Brussels is a place where nerdy policy is used to do cutthroat politics. As an editor, I am interested in the what — but even more so the so what. A deal matters, of course, but what really interests me is how it was made: the late nights, the trade-offs, the coalitions, and the rivals. 

Off the Record aims to take you there — through my reporting, my conversations and my observations. One thing to know about me: I’m obsessed with the idea of zeitgeist.

It’s a notion that has accompanied me for well over a decade. One of the best editors I ever worked with told me at the beginning of my career that a reporter’s mission is to capture the moment and put it on the page.
