PARIS -A prisoner who had taken two guards hostage at a French high-security prison has surrendered, the justice minister said on his Twitter feed on Tuesday.

Earlier, the prisoner had released one of the guards, a woman, unhurt, at the Condé-sur-Sarthe prison in western France, while an second guard, a man, was being held, the justice ministry had said in a statement.

"The hostage situation is over. The prisoner has surrendered," French Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti tweeted.

The justice ministry said that following negotiations with police forces, the prisoner had surrendered. It said the female prison guard was not hurt and was receiving psychological assistance, while the second guard was receiving medical care.

Broadcaster BFMTV reported the male guard had sustained an injury to his right eye and that the hostage-taker was serving a long sentence for rape and attempted murder.

The TV channel said the prisoner, who was armed with a knife, had made a number of demands, including a reduction in his sentence.
