MADRID (Reuters) – Spain’s Iberdrola said on Thursday it had opened a “new and exhaustive” internal investigation after Spanish media reports alleged it had hired a former police chief in 2004 to carry out private investigations.

News websites El Confidencial and Moncloa.com reported that Spain’s largest utility company had hired Jose Manuel Villarejo’s firm, Grupo Cenyt, to investigate an official at a rival company, a judge and a group of environmentalists.

The company confirmed it had worked with Villarejo and said two previous investigations found the contracts and remuneration to be in line with company’s standards.
