A Brazilian drug trafficker who tried to escape from prison this weekend by dressing up as his teenage daughter was found dead in his cell after he allegedly hanged himself, Rio de Janeiro state authorities said on Tuesday.

Clauvino da Silva, a drug dealer from the southwest city of Angra dos Reis, put on a mask, wig, and women's clothes to try and fool authorities at the Bangu jail complex on Saturday.

But the unusual plan was thwarted by state prison police who caught him before he could taste freedom.

Prison officials said he planned to leave his daughter inside the prison in his place.

In a video released by prison authorities, Silva is seen wearing a mask to resemble a girl, a long black wig, glasses, and women's clothing, including a bra. Prison officials then ask him to take off his disguise, which he does, revealing his muscular body.

Authorities said Silva's daughter and seven other people were arrested on suspicion of trying to help him escape. The drug trafficker was transferred to another prison and would face punishment, they had said.

But the story took a twist on Tuesday when prison authorities found da Silva dead in his cell.

"The inmate appears to have hanged himself with a bedsheet," Rio's prison authority said in a statement, adding that an investigation had been opened.

He's the latest prisoner to die in Brazil's prisons. Last week, 57 people died after a prison riot broke out between rival gangs in the northern state of Para and in May more than 50 inmates died in similar circumstances in prison riots in the northern state of Amazonas.
