Donald Trump has accepted an invitation for a state visit to the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II said on Tuesday.

The US president, whose last visit to Britain sparked protests, will return from June 3-5.

He will then meet his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on June 6, according to the White House.

Trump is pictured above with the Queen during last year's visit to the UK, during which he had tea with the monarch at Windsor Castle.

This year's trip will be different as it is classed as an official state visit, which means the Queen, acting on the advice of the government, would have formally invited Trump. The visit includes a ceremonial welcome and a state banquet.

The Queen has hosted two state visits from US presidents: George W Bush in 2003 and Barack Obama in 2011.
