Cruzeiro win state title with draw at Atletico
(Reuters) – A goal 11 minutes from time helped Cruzeiro to the Minas Gerais state championship after a 1-1 draw at arch-rivals Atletico Mineiro gave them a 3-2 aggregate victory in Belo Horizonte.
Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Atletico took the lead through Elias after 29 minutes.
A one-goal win would have given them the title because of their superior regular season record but former Brazil and Lyon striker Fred equalised from the spot with a VAR-assisted penalty.
The goal preserved Cruzeiro’s unbeaten start to the season and means they have now gone 19 games without defeat.
