Is it a phone, a tablet - or both?

In the battle for tech supremacy, the Chinese Telecoms giant Huawei has launched a foldable smartphone – just days after rival Samsung unveiled a similar device.

The Huawei Mate X is a 5G device and has a dual external screen that folds out to become a slim 16.76 centimetre smartphone and unfold into a 20.3-centimetre tablet.

When folded out in tablet style, the phone is 5.4 mm thick and it's 11 mm when folded as a smartphone.

Huawei says the 5G phone can downloads at a speed of 4.6 GB per second, which means it can download a full length movie in three seconds.

It isn't clear how long the phone's 4500 mAh battery lasts.

Huawei launched the phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Sunday.

Huawei is the third company to release a foldable phone. The Royole FlexPai released one in late 2018 and Samsung released the Galaxy Fold a few days ago.

But despite its slimline size, you will still need deep pockets.

The Mate X will start at 2,299 Euros. It’s expected to go on sale in the middle of the year.
