Daytrippers as well as overnight guests will soon have to pay to visit the Italian city of Venice
ADVERTISEMENTItaly's newly-approved budget includes the introduction of an entrance tax for tourists who visit Venice.
At present visitors pay a charge of one euro-fifty-cents each for every night spent in a hotel or rented apartment. The new measure authorises the city to replace that with an entrance tax, meaning that anyone who visits the city for a day or even just a few hours, will also have to pay.
It's estimated that the new system will be worth around 50 million euros a year, up from the present 30 million a year.
In 2017 over ten million tourists spent at least one night in a hotel. If daytrippers are included that figure goes up to 27 million visitors.
