A rescue boat run by Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms arrived in Spain's port of Algeciras carrying 311 migrants on Friday morning.

The migrants were rescued off the coast of Libya on Saturday (December 22). One mother and her newborn baby were airlifted to Malta to receive medical care.

Proactiva's rescue boat was then refused entry by several European countries, including Malta and Italy.

The migrants spent Christmas at sea as the vessel headed for Spain.

It docked at 8.55 am CET after undertaking a journey of over 2,000 miles, crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

Staff from the Red Cross were waiting in the harbour to carry out health checks on the migrants.

Officials will then identify the migrants — following the country's immigration procedure — and each application to remain in Spain will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
