US and Turkey lead call for information on whereabouts
ADVERTISEMENTTurkey's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday they will search the Saudi consulate in Istanbul as part of an investigation in the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Hami Aksoy, the foreign ministry spokesman, said in a written statement that the consulate's building will be searched "in the framework of the investigation".
They didn't specify when the building would be searched.
Khashoggi was seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week but never came out.
The United States and Turkey are leading calls for Riyadh to provide evidence on the whereabouts of the missing journalist.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked the Saudi government on Monday to prove that Khashoggi had left the consulate building in Istanbul while Washington urged Riyadh to support an investigation into his disappearance.
NBC’s Richard Engel reported for Good Morning Europe about the growing concerns about Khashoggi.
The United Nations human rights office has also expressed concern about the "apparent enforced disappearance" of Khashoggi.
"Yes, this is of serious concern, the apparent enforced disappearance of Mr Khashoggi from the Saudi consulate in Istanbul," U.N. human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a Geneva news briefing.
During a press conference in Hungary on Monday, Erdogan said he himself was following the investigation, saying it was his political and humanitarian duty.
