(Reuters) – Nantes have appointed their former striker Vahid Halilhodzic as their new coach following the sacking of Miguel Cardoso, the French Ligue 1 club announced on Tuesday.

Nantes have made a poor start to the season, winning only one of their first eight games under Portuguese Cardoso to sit second from bottom in the league.

Bosnian Halilhodzic, who led Japan to the World Cup but was sacked in April, scored 111 goals in 192 games for Nantes and helped them lift the league title in 1983.

He has signed a deal to coach them until 2020 and his first game in charge will be at Bordeaux on Sunday.

After his dismissal by Japan Halilhodzic launched a lawsuit against the country’s football association saying he was fired illegally two months before the tournament in Russia.

Halilhodzic has previous coaching experience in France, having worked with Lille and Paris St Germain. He also completed coaching stints in Turkey, Croatia and Saudi Arabia.
