(Reuters) - UK Athletics (UKA) chief executive Niels de Vos will leave his role at the end of this month after 11 years in charge, with strategy and partnerships director Nigel Holl taking up the position on an interim basis.

During De Vos' tenure, Britain won 13 Olympic medals in athletics, including six gold, at the last two Games in London and Rio de Janeiro. The 51-year-old is leaving to set up his own business.

"Niels has been a fantastic servant to not only UKA, but the sport of athletics as a whole. The sport has grown and been hugely successful under his leadership," UK Athletics said.

"UK Athletics will retain his services in a limited capacity in order that a number of important issues where he has led discussions and negotiations are brought to a conclusion."

UKA said they would shortly commence an open recruitment process to find a successor for De Vos.
