Euronews asked readers in December for their vote on who should be the 2017 Personalities of the Year—in fields including space, innovation, culture, business, EU and sport. Find out more about Oxfam, that won EU Personality of the Year, and the other nominees below.

Sven Giegold—German Green MEP

As tax spokesman for the European Greens, Giegold has been a key champion of moves to challenge multinational companies and individuals over tax avoidance. He played a major role in placing the results of leaks such as the Panama and Paradise Papers onto the European political agenda.

Vera Jurova—European commissioner

Jurova's job is to challenge gender discrimination and in the year of #MeToo she has used policy and communication tools to make a difference, including telling her own personal story.

Jeanne Ponte—French parliamentary assistant

Ponte was one of the few European Parliamentary figures willing to speak openly about sexual harrassment she had witnessed in the workplace. Amid a backdrop where other victims refused to reveal themselves amid what they described as a culture of intimidation, Ponte's case helped to spur acceptance of the gravity of the issue.

Viviane Reding—Luxembourger MEP and former European Commissioner

This summer, following a decade of negotiations, EU rules came into force banning mobile phone companies from charging exorbitant fees for "roaming" when customers travel within the EU. The initiative, spearheaded by Reding, is one of the most lauded achievements of the EU and one which has bolstered its claim as a champion of consumers.

Oxfam—Campaign group

When the EU's attempt to create a blacklist of tax havens was criticised as politically influenced, Oxfam came forward with its own list, influenced neither by fear nor favour. The campaign group has made sure the issue has never slipped from the headlines.
