The whale replaces the skeleton of a Diplodocus dinosaur, also known as Dippy, which is due to go on a national tour between early 2018 and late 2020.

The Duchess of Cambridge and Sir David Attenborough are due to attend the reopening of the refurbished museum hall on Thursday evening.
