Crackdown in crackland

Brazilian riot police arrested 34 in a pre-dawn raid on Sunday (May 21) in the downtown Sao Paulo neighbourhood known as Cracolandia (Crackland), a notorious zone where crack cocaine users and addicts can feel free to loiter while doping up.

The operation was spearheaded by the metropolitan government under the auspices of Sao Paulo Governor, Geraldo Alckmin, which is intent on revitalising the area that’s been ravaged by the crack epidemic that took root back in the 1990’s.
