The cities of Nice and Venice erupted into celebration as their annual carnivals got underway.
Amid extremely tight security, Nice held its biggest public event since last year’s July 14 truck attack. The event featured floats carrying giant political figures.
Acrobats and magical Chinese lanterns officially opened the Venice carnival. Many in the crowds had donned costumes and masks to get into the carnival spirit.
