A huge sinkhole that swallowed a five-lane junction in Japan has been repaired in just one week.

The crater, which was 30-metres long and 15-metres deep, caused havoc when it devoured an intersection in the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka.

The road was re-opened on Tuesday, a week after the sinkhole appeared.

Workers dumped 7,000 cubic metres of soil and cement – or 2,000 truck’s worth – into the hole to fill it up.

Officials in the city have said the crater was caused by construction work on a nearby subway line.
