Tesco claim that sales have declined less than expected indicating a reversal in fortunes is around the corner.

Britain’s largest retailer has endured a dreadful couple of years coming under price attack from Aldi and Lidl and becoming mired in an accounting scandal.

New chief executive Dave Lewis introduced price cuts on much liked brands, put more staff in the stores and improved product availability.

Tesco says that 180,000 more customers shopped in its stores in the first quarter.
