The China Shipping Container Lines is to invest the Moldovan port of Giurgiulești,
the country’s only port accessible to seagoing vessels.
The hub is vital for Moldova as its economy suffers as a result of the Russian embargo on Moldovan goods.
China’s investment will provide an export lifeline for Moldovan produce now the Russian market is closed.
Thomas Moser, is from Danube Logistics:“China Shipping now offers a direct service to Moldova for Chinese exporters who export goods to Moldova, but most importantly for Moldova it also supplies a direct service from Moldova to countries like China, but also other countries in Asia and the Middle East.”
The move is part of the Chinese government’s plan to create a 21st century maritime Silk Road in collaboration with countrIes located along the route.
Valeriu LAZAR, director Moldovan Trade and Industry Agency sees it as great opportunity for Moldovan manufacturing:
“The doors to Asia have now opened. Our producers have nothing to complain about any more, but they must start delivering competitive products. Now, what is important is to have things to export.”
The port currently reaches 43 countries from the Mediterranean and North Africa all the way to Asia.
Previously Moldovan goods travelled by road to Russia.
