The departure of Dick Costolo as boss of Twitter has been well-received by the markets, who upped shares in the yet-to-make-a-profit company by nearly eight percent on the news.

Co-founder and Chairman Jack Dorsey takes over until a replacement can be found. He will continue to run Square the same time.

Along with the news of the change at the top came the welcome ending of the infamous 140 character restriction on friends messaging each other. This is now being phased out and software developers are busy modifying their programmes to allow for the increase.

Twitter missed its sales and revenue forecasts for Q1, making a 144 million euro loss on sales of 387 million euros.
