A boost for the finances of the Vatican. Hundreds of millions of euros have been added to the books. Divine intervention or creative accounting? Neither, for the treasure trove of euros was uncovered “tucked away” in various Holy See departments.
That’s how Cardinal George Pell described the find. The man brought in by Pope Francis to make the Vatican’s finances more transparent dismissed any wrongdoing. It’s just the money had never appeared on any of the city-state’s balance sheets.
“It is important to point out the Vatican is not broke,” he said, adding, “we have discovered the situation is much healthier than it seemed.”
