ADVERTISEMENTRomania’s Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu has stepped dow, the second foreign minister to quit in the space of a week in response to voting issues in recent elections.
Romanian expats were left for hours waiting in long lines to vote in last week’s presidential second round run-off.
“We want to vote,” they chanted in Turin and Brussels and cities across the EU.
By the time polling stations closed thousands had been unable to cast their ballots.
Melescanu apologised for the kerfuffle before announcing his resignation.
“I regret all these happenings during the second round of elections and I would like to publicly address my excuses for all Romanian citizens living abroad that had to wait in huge queues as to cast their ballots,” he said in a televised address.
His predecessor Titus Corlatean quit after similar problems disrupted voting during the first round of the poll.
