Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac took to the red carpet in Los Angeles for the premiere of their upcoming film ‘A Most Violent Year’.
The director is J.C. Chandor, best known for his award-winning debut feature ‘Margin Call’. ‘A Most Violent Year’ is a moral thriller set in New York in 1981 – statistically the deadliest 12 months in the city’s history.
Isaac and Chastain play a husband and wife trying to make their small business grow while staying clear of their crime-ridden environment.
Guatemala-born American actor Oscar Isaac explained what attracted him to the role: “Well, I think the fact that it’s not the cliché that you think it might be, you know, that’s part of why I was so attracted to it.
‘You don’t usually see characters in films of Latin descent represented this way, which is someone who is trying to do the right thing. He’s a business man, he’s growing, he’s in an ocean of sharks but he’s trying to take the right road, which is the long view and the non-violent view and I just think that that was refreshing,” he said.
Isaac plays a first-generation immigrant who runs a heating-oil business with his Brooklyn-born wife. Business is good until his fuel trucks start getting hijacked by anonymous gunmen. Things get nasty after he chases off a suspect one night, to find his daughter with a loaded gun in her hands the next morning .
Jessica Chastain was full of praise for her co-star: “Well, first of all, I think they (people) are going to take away Oscar’s performance because he’s really incredible in it and it’s a morality tale. I think people hear ‘A Most Violent Year’ and they expect it to be this very gory, violent film. In fact, it’s a film about a person who is trying to live a life of non violence in the most violent year of New York.”
The movie opened the American Film Institute festival in Los Angeles to critical acclaim, though it remains to be seen whether it will obtain the coveted nomination for the Academy Awards.
‘A Most Violent Year’ is on global release in December.
