A great stink has descended on Moscow in a thick smog-like cloud that has prompted speculation there has been an accident at the Russian capital’s refinery, located in the south-east.
Residents complained of a chemical smell, and while officials initially said they had no idea where the smell was coming from, they then affirmed there had been an incident at the refinery.
Its owner Gazprom says it is working normally. Air analysis has revealed hydrogen sulfide levels six times the safe level.
While faint winds mean the smog has hung around, the weather is expected to change and disperse the cloud over the coming days.
