ISIL fighters claim they have captured a second gas field in Syria.

Photos released online purportedly show the Islamic State group’s flag hoisted over the Jahar gas field, as well as seized weapons and vehicles. Reuters news agency could not independently verify the content posted on social media.

ISIL militants control up to one third of Syria as well as large swathes of neighbouring Iraq.

In Kobani, Syrian Kurds continue to defend the town from the ISIL onslaught which has lasted more than 40 days.

Joined by Iraqi Kurdish fighters and aided by US-led airstrikes against the insurgents, they have managed to keep ISIL from taking full-control of the town bordering Turkey. However US military command reiterated the situation remains “fragile”.
