A US student has opened fire at his school near Seattle, killing a classmate and critically injuring four others before turning the gun on himself.

The gunman who is being named as Jaylen Fryberg.

Witnesses say he walked into the cafeteria of Marysville Pilchuck High School on Friday approaching a table of friends and shot at their backs.

The four wounded students have been taken to hospital.

Police commander RobbLamoureaux said:
“We have completed a sweep of the high school with our law enforcement staff. We are now going back through and doing a grid search, like a back check.”

Fryberg was described as well-liked and a member of the school’s wrestling and football teams.

Authorities said they did not know what had motivated him to carry out the attack

Students were taken to a nearby church while the school was put on lockdown.

It’s the latest in a string of deadly rampages at American schools that have provoked a debate on the easy accessibility of guns in the country.
