Sweden’s military is following up two new sightings that could be evidence of what it calls suspected ‘foreign underwater activity’.
Naval vessels have been scouring the sea off Stockholm since Friday after reports of foreign submarines or divers using an underwater vehicle.
Five areas are now being assessed with the aim of gathering intelligence rather than launching military action according to Rear Admiral Anders Grenstad:
“Today I can reveal two more observations resulting from information from the general public and they are credible enough to warrant further investigation,” announced Grenstad.
Sweden’s supreme military commander commented that it was just too bad that someone or something is operating inside Swedish territory.
During the Cold War, Sweden was constantly on alert for Soviet submarine activity. Today Russia denies its vessels are involved but Moscow’s recent annexation of Crimea has raised tension levels in the region.
