French President Francois Hollande has described the killing of mountain guide Hervé Gourdel as a “cruel and cowardly act:”
His captors, an Algerian jihadist group linked to ISIL, posted a video of his murder called “Message of Blood for the French government.”

Monsieur Gourdel was kidnapped on Sunday while driving through the Kabylie region of Algeria.
The 55-year-old was on a hiking and cave exploration holiday when he was abducted.
The killers had issued France a deadline to halt airstrikes against ISIL, when it expired the hostage was beheaded.
